The Honorable Jacques Chirac
President of the Republic of France
Elysee Palace
Paris,
France
Dear President Chirac,
As president of the International Sakharov Committee I am turning to you concerning People's
Mojahedin of Iran.
In March 1995 on the occasion of "The Social Summit" meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark,
our Queen Margrethe II of Denmark was the host for 112 presidents from all over the world. On
that occasion our committee was asked from all ten parties of the Danish Parliament to arrange a
hearing in the Danish Parliament Building concerning Human Rights. Many journalists were
covering the presidential meeting, and the politicians wanted to underline that Denmark has a
high concern for Human Rights.
In our committee we decided in agreement with the Danish politicians to make a hearing on the
violation of Human Rights in Iran. Since then, we have had close contact with the exil
government of Iran the "National Council of Resistance of Iran" ((NCRI). The Mojahedin are on
the list of terrorist on behalf of suggestion from the government of Iran. They should be credited
for standing up to the Mullahs.
We have been following the developments regarding the French police raid against Iran's main
opposition, the National Council of Resistance of Iran with great concern. What is astonishing is
that such a move is taking place against the movement, which has had no record of unlawful or
"terrorist" activities in France or Europe.
What makes it more ironic, is that the unjustifiable attacks are taking place when Iran is
engulfed in anti-government protests by Iranians of all walks of life who are calling for the
removal of the clerical dictatorship and the establishment of democracy in Iran. The recent
French attack against the opposition is not what the Iranian people deserve to receive.
I urge you to free the movement's president-elect, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi immediately and make
sure that no extradition or expulsion will be applied to anybody who has been detained.
