Coronavirus fatalities in 325 cities exceed 50,000

Maryam Rajavi: Such great loss of lives could have been avoided

The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran announced this afternoon, Sunday, June 7, 2020, that the number of victims of coronavirus infections in 325 cities across Iran has surpassed 50,000.

On the number of victims, one of the state-run media wrote: “The coronavirus has taken a higher toll on Iranians than the imposed (Iran-Iraq) war, but since there is no uproar about it we might be misled… They have normalized all activities, justifying it by repeating the rhetorical phrase of “observing the hygienic protocols,” as if the coronavirus gets scared of these words!… We have already entered the second wave of the pandemic and more deaths are on the way, more than a military war.” (asriran.ir, June 6)

This catastrophe could have been prevented and such large scale of loss of lives could have been avoided. However, the death toll in Iran and even the official figures could not be compared to the death toll in other countries in the Middle East where the economic and social infrastructures and foundations are much weaker than in Iran.

Ali Kamenei (the mullahs’ supreme leader) and Hassan Rouhani (the mullahs’ president) are directly responsible for the soaring number of victims and they must be held to account. They sent workers and toilers to work and to the altar of the coronavirus, instead of paying a few months of their salaries from the funds accumulated by the economic cartels controlled by Khamenei and the IRGC.
