Iran: Brutal Execution of PMOI Members Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani

At dawn on Sunday, July 27, 2025—coinciding with the anniversary of the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners—Khamenei’s executioners, in a brutal crime, hanged the heroic PMOI (People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran) members Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani in Ghezel Hesar Prison.
Behrouz Ehsani, 70, a brave son of the people of Urmia and a political prisoner of the 1980s, was arrested in Tehran in December 2022. Mehdi Hassani, 48, a courageous son of the people of Shahr-e-Rey, was arrested in Zanjan in October 2022. Both were subjected to savage torture in Ward 209 of Evin Prison and, on September 16, 2024, were sentenced to death by the notorious judge Iman Afshari, head of Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, for being members of the PMOI. The regime’s Supreme Court later upheld the verdict. This same court rejected four separate requests for a retrial.
Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), paid tribute to these steadfast PMOI members who, after three years of enduring torture, pressure, and threats, remained unwavering in their commitment to God and the people, and embraced martyrdom with dignity. She stated: “In what appears to be a desperate act during the twilight of his rule, Khamenei has perpetrated yet another grave crime—an effort to delay the inevitable collapse of his regime. Far from securing his hold on power, this brutality only intensifies the outrage of the Iranian people and reinforces the determination of Iran’s courageous youth to bring an end to this theocratic tyranny.”
She called on the United Nations and its member states to strongly condemn this barbaric crime and emphasized that mere verbal condemnation is not enough: “The time has come for concrete and effective action. The international community’s inaction has emboldened this bloodthirsty regime to commit further crimes and executions. Many PMOI and resistance prisoners are currently on death row—urgent action must be taken to save their lives.”
In addition to Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani, 14 other political prisoners have been sentenced to death by the regime’s judiciary for alleged membership in the PMOI and are at imminent risk of execution.
Mrs. Rajavi, addressing world leaders and politicians, stated: “Silence in the face of escalating executions and savage human rights violations in Iran over the past four decades has not only served as a green light to the ruling clerics to continue their crimes against the Iranian people, but has also encouraged the regime’s export of terrorism, warmongering, and pursuit of nuclear weapons. Governments’ inaction allowed repeated calls from human rights organizations and various parliaments to prevent the execution of Behrouz and Mehdi to be ignored. It is time to put an end to this inaction in the face of a regime of executions, torture, and terror.”
After receiving his death sentence, Behrouz declared in a message to the Iranian people:
“… I will not bargain over my life with anyone. I am ready for my insignificant life to be the sacrifice for the liberation of the Iranian people…”
In October 2024, Mehdi stated: “I proudly declare that I am very happy to give my life for the freedom of my homeland and the noble people of Iran… The regime’s murderous judges can only dream that I would retreat even one percent from my position. Just as I declared proudly before the judge and the prosecutor of the reactionary regime: I am a supporter of the (PMOI) Organization and nothing else.”
