Tribute to Gunnar Sonsteby, Hero of the Resistance against Nazis in Norway
The statue shows Sonsteby with his bike, capturing the moment he decided to join the resistance. He was riding his bike and saw a battalion of Nazis marching toward the Norwegian parliament. Sonsteby said at the time: “I would rather die than tolerate it.” He then jumped on his bike and joined the first resistance cell he could find.
In her speech to a convention of Iranian associations in Oslo, Maryam Rajavi brought up her meeting with the resistance hero: “During my trip to Oslo four years ago, I met Gunnar Sonsteby, Norwegian national hero of the resistance against the Nazis. He praised the strength of freedom fighters at Camp Ashraf and said the Iranian Resistance has done what Norwegian resistance forces did during World War II when they blew up the heavy water nuclear reactor the Nazis had built in Norway. “
